Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez
Age 76
Son of the legendary Cuban bassist, Israel "Cachao" Lopez. He was a co-founder of the highly acclaimed Buena Vista Social Club, a master of classical, jazz, and jazz fusion musical genres. He was also a pioneer of cuban mambo, and was an esteemed member of Cuba's National Symphony. A great musician by any standard and a true master of Mambo Arts. He will be missed worldwide. Age 74
Legendary Motown Records Drummer / Percussionist who ( along with the incomparable Bennie Benjamin ) was the bedrock of the Motown Sound group of recording studio musicians who were collectively known as THE FUNK BROTHERS. If you single out the drumming and the bass parts ( bass courtesy of the incredible James Jamerson ), you can find yourself understanding more about why the Motown Records that Barry Gordy put out in the sixties was indeed the SOUND OF A GENERATION! Since I have mentioned Motown and some of the FUNK BROTHERS, I thought it might be interesting to include a 1973 clip of Motown "Mambo Artists" of the past; Marvin Gaye and James Jamerson. The late, great Marvin Gaye was originally a drummer when he was first employed at Motown. He was not a Uriel James or a Bennie Benjamin on drums, but it was his drumming on the original recording of the classic hit, WHAT'S GOING ON, which is the song that is featured on the clip you can view below...or by clicking the following link-WHAT'S GOING ON?
